Oil sketch Practice

This is an oil sketch I did for practice. Many people that are learning how to paint don't practice on a daily basis. We accept the notion of ''you must practice every day'' wen it comes to drawing but it's good to carry that mentality when you are painting. It's simple to pickup a pencil and start to draw, but one must not be afraid of paint. With time you can learn to setup in a way that can be quick to start painting and less daunting.

Sports Bar Painting

This was a commission for the Bombers Sports Bar in Downtown Moncton. The owner said he will reframe it and it will hang inside the bar.

Urban Painting - (Part 2)

Time to hit the streets again in downtown Moncton NB. At this point in the pictures the drawing was already locked down on canvas and I was well on my way. I started by creating a light underpainting. Next I was pushing and pulling some of the values to bring it all to life. Still more to come...

Urban Painting - (Part 1)

This is the preparatory drawing for a painting I'm currently working on. It was commissioned to me last year but the snow got in the way. Everyone knows it takes more than snow for me to stop painting but since the client wanted a painting without snow I had to postpone.

Some of the lines are a bit strange, this was all done freehand with the sight size method.

I'll be posting my progress.

Quick Wisdom...

There are certain things in art you will only learn if you slow down or speed up. It doesn't mean you need to change your ways but it simply means that you should look at things differently than the way you did before.

We often say "look at things in a different angle." So why not look at things in a different speed next time you create?

You mite just learn something new.

Downtown Painting.

Today was so nice outside I decided paint outdoors. Here's the downtown location.

The Capitol Theaters is my focal point in this painting. I Usually paint from the center (focal point) wherever that may be. By center I don't mean the center of the canvas but more were my attention will focus. There's always an area were our eyes will give more attention. It's important to note that I focus on an area and not details.

Aways make sure your perspective is correct otherwise you will end up with floating buildings.

Plein Air Painting

Colors were added with a limited palette of Burnt Umber, Yellow Ochre, Black, Zinc Titanium White.

A limited palette was chosen to help keep the color harmony in painting. Before adding any more colors I made sure to cover most of the canvas.

Once the canvas is covered I start adding a bit of Vermilion and Ultramarine into the mix.

Plein Air Painting in the snow.

Here you can see me walking around with my sketchbook like I always do.

I walk around with my sketchbook and a black ink pen doing a lots of thumbnails to try to find the right location for my painting.

Once I find the right location I set my easel up and start roughing out some lines with a Burnt Sienna conte.

Once I'm done with the first pass in conte I'll start applying some paint in the same color (Burnt Sienna). At this stage I paint very lightly.

Once I cover all my drawing up in paint I'll do a second pass. This time my paint will be a bit darker adding a touch of Burnt Umber into the mix.

Now you can see the painting really well. I did a third pass with just Burnt Umber deluded in oils to add more details and sharper lines. This concludes the Underpainting.

I did a second setting in the same location the next day to start adding colors on canvas but didn't have my good friend Jimmy taking photos that time.

The snow is now melted in the area and there is mud everywhere so I'm now forced to continue this painting in the studio. I will post more photos soon.

For those of you wondering why the canvas was so dark in the previous photos here you can see that I was under a bridge. Romantic non?

Portrait of the artist's Mother

Here's a portrait of my mother done with HB to 8B graphite pencils, 6B charcoal sticks and 2B white Conte on grey mouse paper. The drawing was done from life and detail was added after by looking at pictures taken during the session. Love you Mom!
